Beginner's Guide to Cryptocurrency

Custody, volatility, taxes and position sizing for a first crypto allocation.

By Marcus Iyer, Senior Writer, Markets9 min readUpdated 2026-08-01✓ Fact-checked

Crypto assets are digital tokens recorded on public ledgers. They produce no cash flows, so their value depends entirely on what others will pay.

Custody

Assets on an exchange are an IOU from that exchange. Self-custody removes counterparty risk but makes you responsible for key management.

Sizing

Size any crypto allocation so a total loss would be disappointing rather than damaging. For most portfolios that is a single-digit percentage.
